Who Am I – Body or Soul?
Rahul's videos were becoming very popular. But now, more
than making videos, he loved listening to his Grandpa tell stories from the Bhagavad
Gita. He thought a lot about what he heard. He wondered, "How did
God stop time just by snapping His fingers?"
[Rahul enters,
snapping his fingers and humming a song]
Rahul (snapping
his fingers and singing)
Aey Waqt Ruk Ja, Tham Ja, Thehar Ja Grandpa!, God may be said this too, when He
stopped time by snapping His fingers?"
Grandpa (laughing): "Haha! Yes, my little
Shahrukh Khan! Maybe He did! But now, stop snapping your fingers. Today, I will
tell you something very deep from the Bhagavad Gita. So sit quietly and listen
carefully."
Rahul (smiling): "Okay, Grandpa! Should I start
recording, or do you want to ask me something first?"
Grandpa (smiling): "No, no, your snapping
already said everything! Go ahead!"
Rahul (excitedly): "But Grandpa, wait! You asked
me about Lord Krishna’s five names, and I found them on Google! Can I tell
you?"
Grandpa (happy): "Wow! Yes, tell me, Let’s see
how well you understood."
Rahul (cheerfully):
🔹
Krishna – The one who is very attractive and pulls everyone toward Him.
🔹
Govind – The one who takes care of cows and gives joy to our senses.
🔹
Mohan – The one who charms everyone with His beauty.
🔹
Ghanshyam – The one with a beautiful dark complexion like a cloud.
🔹
Dwarkadheesh – The King of Dwarka.
Grandpa (smiling): "Wow, Rahul! You made me very
happy. Now, let’s get back to the Gita."
Grandpa (serious now): "Lord Krishna told
Arjuna, ‘All these kings you see on the battlefield were born before, then they
died, and now they are born again. This cycle of birth and death keeps going
on.’"
Rahul (curious): "Grandpa, slow down! So God
said that after death, we are born again? Everyone? You, me, everyone?"
Grandpa: "Yes, Rahul! That’s what God
says—everyone gets born again!"
Rahul (surprised):
"Really, Grandpa? Does this really happen?"
Grandpa: "Yes, my child! And God also says
something very important—‘You are a soul, not this body.’"
Rahul (shocked):
"What, Grandpa? I am a soul? Not this body?"
Grandpa: "Yes, Rahul! This body is just like
clothes that you wear."
Rahul (looking at his hand): "If I am not this
body, does that mean this hand is not mine?"
Grandpa: "Your hand is yours, but it is not
you."
Rahul (thinking deeply): "Oh! So this body
belongs to me, but I am not the body?"
Grandpa (nodding): "Exactly!"
Rahul (sitting cross-legged on the floor, calmly): "I
am not this body… I am a soul… I am a peaceful and happy soul… The soul never
dies, but the body does."
[Then suddenly laughs]
"Grandpa, I heard this on your Aastha channel!"
[Rahul looks at himself in the mirror, feeling confused]
Rahul (a little frustrated): "But Grandpa, I
don’t understand this soul thing! I see Rahul in the mirror, not a soul!
How can I see my soul?"
Grandpa (smiling): "Just like your hand is part
of your body but not 'you,' the soul is inside you, but you are the
soul."
Rahul (thinking hard): "Hmm… So the soul is
inside me, just like my hand is part of my body, but I am not my hand. Right,
Grandpa?"
Grandpa: "Yes, my dear! Now you’re getting
it!"
[Rahul smiles, still thinking deeply about it.]
Grandpa: "Rahul, this is a little hard to understand, but
let me explain with an example."
Grandpa: "Look at this mobile phone… What if it
breaks?"
Rahul (quickly): "Oh no, Grandpa! Don’t say that! It’s my new
phone!"
Grandpa (smiling): "See, this is attachment, Rahul! Now, tell me—if we
remove the SIM card from a phone, can we still make calls from it?"
Rahul: "No!"
Grandpa: "And if we put the same SIM card into another phone
and call me, whose name will appear?"
Rahul (thinking): "It will still say Rahul!"
Grandpa: "So, is your name on the mobile phone or the
SIM card?"
Rahul (smiling): "On the SIM card!"
Grandpa: "Exactly! Just like a SIM card needs a phone to
work, the soul needs a body to live."
Rahul: "So, Grandpa, we are the SIM card, not the mobile
phone!"
Grandpa: "Yes! And just like we transfer a SIM card to a new
phone, our soul moves to a new body after death. But people are so busy
taking care of the phone (body) that they forget to save anything on the SIM
card (soul)."
Rahul: "Oh! So, Lord Krishna was telling Arjuna that in
the war, only the mobile (body) will be finish, but the SIM card
(soul) will be safe!"
Grandpa: "Yes! And Krishna also gave another example—just
like we change old clothes and wear new ones, the soul leaves the old body and
takes a new one."
Rahul: "Grandpa, can I give an example too?"
Grandpa: "Of course! Go ahead!"
Rahul: "A mobile phone and its cover!"
Grandpa: "That’s a great one, Rahul!"
Grandpa: "Now tell me, in a car and a driver, who is the car,
and who is the driver?"
Rahul: "The car is the body, and the driver
is the soul!"
Grandpa: "How?"
Rahul: "Because if a car crashes, the driver can get into
another car!"
Grandpa: "Wow! And another example—TV and electricity!"
Rahul: "Oh! So the TV is the body, and electricity
is the soul? A TV won’t work without electricity!"
Grandpa: "Exactly! And here’s one more—a bird and a cage!"
Rahul (excitedly): "Yes, Grandpa! Now I get it! The cage is the
body, and the bird is the soul!"
Grandpa: "Now tell me, should we take care of the cage
or the bird?"
Rahul: "The bird!"
Grandpa: "Correct! If we only clean the cage but don’t feed
the bird, will it be happy?"
Rahul: "No!"
Grandpa: "That means we should take care of our body,
but we must take even more care of our soul."
Rahul: "Grandpa, how do we make our soul happy?"
Grandpa: "By following our Dharma!"
Rahul: " Dharma means duty doing what we
are supposed to do, right, Grandpa?"
Grandpa: "Yes! Like a student’s duty is to study, a
human’s duty is to help others, and our greatest duty is to remember
God. When we don’t do our duty, our soul does not feel happy."
Rahul (excitedly): "So, being happy and peaceful is food for the
soul!"
Grandpa: "Exactly!"
Rahul: "Wow, Grandpa! You gave me a whole new lesson
today!"
Grandpa (smiling): "Not me, my child. This wisdom comes from Lord
Krishna!"
Rahul: "Grandpa, can we see the soul?"
Grandpa: "No, Rahul! The soul cannot be seen with our eyes.
But we can feel it inside us by sitting in peace and meditating."
Rahul: "Grandpa, have you ever felt your soul? What does
it feel like?"
Grandpa: "Come tomorrow, and Lord Krishna will tell us more
about the soul!"
Rahul: "Really, Grandpa? Is all this written in the Bhagavad
Gita?"
Grandpa: "Yes, my child! Everything is in the Gita.
Tomorrow, we will learn more!"
Rahul: "Okay, Grandpa! Should I stop the video and go
now?"
Grandpa: "Yes, but before going, give me some water. I am
very thirsty."
Rahul (playfully): "For you or for your soul,
Grandpa?"
Grandpa (laughing): "Both! Now go to sleep, you naughty boy!"
